Sierra Leone Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors

Sierra Leone is a small West African country with a lot packed in: a long Atlantic coastline of palm-fringed beaches, rainforest with wildlife, hills and mountains, and a rich and sometimes painful history. English is the official language and Krio is widely spoken, which makes getting around easier for English-speaking visitors.

Most trips begin in and around Freetown, the capital, on the peninsula. From here you can reach beaches such as Lumley, River No. 2, Tokeh and Bureh, take a boat to the Banana Islands, or visit Bunce Island, a historic site on the Sierra Leone River. Further afield, Tiwai Island and the national parks offer wildlife and rainforest for travelers with more time.

The dry season, roughly November to April, is the most popular time to visit, with easier travel and more reliable weather. The rainy season brings heavy rain, greener scenery and fewer visitors, but can disrupt roads and boat crossings.

Practical points to sort early: check the visa and entry rules for your passport, ask a doctor or travel clinic about vaccinations and malaria precautions well before you travel (a yellow fever certificate is commonly required), and arrange travel insurance. The airport is at Lungi, across the estuary from Freetown, so plan the crossing into your arrival and departure.

A local agency can save time and stress, particularly on transfers, boat crossings and trips beyond the capital. Tell us how many days you have and what you want to see, and we will suggest a plan and arrange flights, hotels, transfers and guides in one booking.
