Money, SIM Cards and Staying Connected in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone's currency is the leone. The country redenominated its currency in 2022, so older notes and prices you may see in older guides can be confusing. Check the current notes and rates before you travel, and ask what a price is quoted in if it is unclear.

Cash is widely used, and card payments cannot be assumed away from larger hotels and some restaurants. Carry enough cash for everyday purchases, and keep it in more than one place. Changing money is usually best done at licensed exchange points or banks, not informally on the street.

Mobile money is widely used by locals, but may be hard for visitors to set up, so do not rely on it. Ask your hotel or guide what works for visitors at the time you travel.

For data and calls, the simplest approach is to buy a local SIM card on arrival, with networks such as Orange and Africell operating in the country, or to check whether your own provider offers affordable roaming. You will need your passport to register a SIM. Coverage varies outside the main towns.

Download offline maps and keep copies of your documents on your phone. If you would like help with your first days, we can arrange an airport pickup and talk you through payments and connectivity before you land.
