How to Visit the Banana Islands From Freetown

The Banana Islands lie off the southern end of the Freetown Peninsula, and offer quiet beaches, clear water for snorkeling and some interesting history. They are a popular day trip or overnight stay for visitors who want a break from the capital.

The journey has two parts: a road transfer from Freetown to the departure point at Kent, followed by a boat crossing of roughly twenty minutes. Allow for the road journey, which varies with traffic and conditions, and for waiting for the boat.

The best time to go is the dry season, roughly November to April, when the sea is calmer and the weather is more reliable. In the rainy season, crossings can be rougher or disrupted, so keep your plans flexible.

Pack sun protection, a swimsuit, water, cash for small purchases, and a waterproof bag for your belongings during the crossing. Facilities on the islands are simple.

We organise Banana Islands trips with transfers, boat crossings and accommodation arranged together, and can combine them with other stops on the peninsula. Our Banana Islands snorkel and history tour is a good place to start.
