Flying Home to Sierra Leone for the Holidays: Tips for the Diaspora

Every year, many Sierra Leoneans living abroad travel home around Christmas, the end of the year and for family events. Flights fill up and prices rise during these periods, so booking early is the single most useful thing you can do.

Check your documents first. Make sure your passport is valid for long enough, that you know what you need to enter Sierra Leone on the passport you hold, and that your vaccination certificates, including yellow fever, are in order. If you travel on a foreign passport, confirm the visa rules for it.

Think about baggage. Many families carry gifts and heavy luggage, so compare baggage allowances and the cost of extra bags between airlines, not just the fare. Pack essential items and medication in your hand luggage in case checked bags are delayed.

Plan the last leg. Freetown's airport is at Lungi, across the estuary, so arrange your pickup and the crossing in advance, especially if you land at night or are travelling with children and elderly relatives.

Our team in Freetown can help your family with tickets, visas, airport pickups and the Lungi crossing, so the journey home starts and ends smoothly. Contact us with your dates.
