The Best Time to Visit Sierra Leone: Dry Season vs. Rainy Season

Sierra Leone has two main seasons: a dry season and a rainy season. The dry season runs roughly from November to April and is the most popular time to visit, with more sunshine, easier travel and calmer conditions for beaches and boat trips. The rainy season, roughly May to October, brings heavy downpours, especially in the middle months.

For a beach holiday on the Freetown Peninsula, the dry season is the clear choice. Roads and boat crossings are more dependable, and the days are more reliably bright. If you are planning island visits or a trip to the rainforest, the same applies, since access is generally easier when it is not raining heavily.

The early part of the dry season, from about November to January, is often the most comfortable. Later in the dry season it becomes hotter, and the harmattan, a dry wind from the Sahara, can bring hazy skies and dust for some weeks around the turn of the year. If photography matters to you, ask us what to expect in your travel month.

That does not mean the rainy season is a write-off. The landscape is greener, there are fewer visitors, and prices for some stays can be lower. It does mean you should build in flexibility, because heavy rain can disrupt road and water transport, and pack accordingly.

Weather varies from year to year, so treat any guide, including this one, as a starting point. Tell us your dates and what you want to do, and we will give you a straight answer on whether the timing works and how to plan around it.
