Beaches Near Freetown: A Short Guide to the Peninsula Coast

The Freetown Peninsula has some of the best-known beaches in Sierra Leone, and most are within reach of the city. Lumley is the closest and most convenient. Further out, River No. 2, Tokeh and Bureh are popular for longer stays, with palm-backed sand and a more relaxed pace.

River No. 2 is often described as one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, where a river meets the sea. Tokeh is known for its long stretch of sand and its range of places to stay. Bureh is the one surfers talk about, thanks to reliable waves for people who want to try the sport.

Conditions change with the seasons. The dry season, roughly November to April, is the easiest time for beach days and for getting around. In the rainy season the sea can be rougher and roads can be harder going, so check conditions before you set out, and take local advice on swimming.

Plan your logistics before you go. Allow generous time for the road from the city, agree transport and a return time in advance, and carry cash for small purchases, since card payments cannot be assumed away from larger hotels. If you want to stay overnight, book ahead in the busier months.

We arrange beach stays, transfers and private drivers for the peninsula, and can combine them with the Banana Islands or a wider Sierra Leone itinerary. Tell us how many days you have and what kind of trip you want, whether relaxed, active or family-friendly, and we will suggest a plan.
